Fried Modak:
Fried Modak is an easy-to-make variation where the modaks are deep-fried instead of steamed. The pleating is simpler but they still have the signature coconut and jaggery filling.
Ukadiche Modak:
Ukadiche Modak is the classic steamed modak recipe. The soft, fluffy outer layer is made from rice flour and stuffed with a coconut and jaggery filling.
Classic Modak Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup rice flour
1 cup water
1 tsp ghee
A pinch of salt
For the filling:
1 cup grated fresh coconut
1 cup jaggery (grated)
1 tsp cardamom powder
A few saffron strands (optional)
Classic Modak Recipe Method:
- Boil water in a pan. Add salt and ghee.
- Gradually add rice flour while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Cover and let it steam for a few minutes.
- Remove from heat and knead into a smooth dough.
- In another pan, melt jaggery, then add grated coconut. Cook till the mixture is slightly dry.
- Add cardamom powder and saffron. Mix well.
- Take small portions of the dough, flatten it, and fill with the coconut mixture. Shape into modaks.
- Steam the modaks for 10-12 minutes. Serve warm.
Puran Poli

Puran Poli Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup chana dal (split Bengal gram)
1 cup jaggery (grated)
1 tsp cardamom powder
2 cups wheat flour
A pinch of turmeric
Water as needed
Ghee for cooking
Puran Poli Recipe Method:
- Cook the chana dal in a pressure cooker until soft. Drain the water and mash the dal.
- In a pan, cook the mashed dal with jaggery on low heat until it thickens. Add cardamom powder and let it cool.
- In a bowl, mix wheat flour, turmeric, and water to form a soft dough. Knead well and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Divide the dough into balls and the puran (filling) into smaller balls.
- Roll out a dough ball into a small disc, place the puran ball in the center, and fold the dough over it. Flatten it and roll it out gently into a thin poli.
- Cook the poli on a hot tawa (griddle) with ghee until golden on both sides. Serve hot with more ghee.
Karanji (Gujiya) – For Bhog on Ganpati Chaturthi Traditional Recipes
Karanji is a deep-fried pastry shell filled with a sweet coconut and jaggery mixture, shaped into a crescent moon. It’s a must-have during the festival and is a popular item in Ganpati Chaturthi traditional recipes.
Karanji (Gujiya) Recipe
Ingredients:
1 cup all-purpose flour (maida)
2 tbsp semolina (rava)
2 tbsp ghee
Water as needed
Oil for deep frying
For the filling:
1 cup grated coconut (dry or fresh)
½ cup powdered sugar
1 tsp cardamom powder
1 tbsp poppy seeds (khuskhus)
1 tbsp chopped nuts (cashews, almonds)
Karanji (Gujiya) Recipes Method:
- In a bowl, mix all-purpose flour, semolina, and ghee. Add water and knead into a soft dough. Cover and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- For the filling, roast the grated coconut lightly until golden. Mix in powdered sugar, cardamom powder, poppy seeds, and chopped nuts.
- Divide the dough into small balls and roll each ball into a thin disc.
- Place a spoonful of the filling in the center of the disc. Fold it over to form a half-moon shape and seal the edges by pressing them with your fingers or using a fork.
- Deep fry the Karanji in hot oil until golden brown. Drain on paper towels and let them cool before serving.

What can you not eat during Ganesh Chaturthi?
